BBE is a non-profit registered charity. Each year BBE must fundraise a set amount in order to support current programming levels. Funds raised above this set amount are used for special projects, special events and to further enhance existing children’s programming. Four to five times a year we ask that families participate to help us achieve our fundraising goal. We understand that fundraising may be time consuming and therefore families may voluntarily opt to make a donation in lieu of taking part in the fundraising events.
Donations may be made by cheque, cash or money order. A charitable donation receipt will be provided for any donations of $10. The name and address of the donor will be on the receipt.
If you are donating gifts of property such as toys, books, equipment, or tickets for auction, a receipt for the fair market value of the gift (if determinable) less any advantage greater than $75 will be provided. For example, if donated tickets were purchased in bulk, the face value of the ticket less the bulk savings amount would be the fair market value for receipt purposes. Fundraising Update and Plans for 2019
Due to your amazing efforts in fundraising in 2018 and your support, we raised $16,229.56!As you can imagine, replenishing supplies and completing much-needed site improvements (both indoors and outdoors) this past year was costly. Your continued support of our fundraising efforts is greatly appreciated and we are so grateful for your help!
In 2018, we spent close to $38,000 in supplies and activitiesfor both centers and another $6,900 for special visitors at both sites. Grants and funds raised through our fundraising campaigns go directly to these costs and were shared amongst all programs.
It should also be noted that the fantastic prizes that we raffle off each year are for the most part donated to the centre. We would like to thank everyone in the community who have donated such amazing prizes!
After each fundraiser, a message is sent out through fastoch and posted on the monitors at both sites that let you know how much was raised. Below please find a summary of how the funds were spent in 2018.
Monterey Outdoors– approximately $8,000 - this year we constructed a total of 5 permanent sunshades over top of popular play area’s that children spend time at in the front, side and back playground. A shade structure for the staff to enjoy on their breaks was also built. Supplies were purchased and the labor to build/install the shade structures was donated.
Planters were donated by Shelmerdines to help create a beautiful space as well as act as a safety barrier between the building, playground and driveway/cars, gravel was purchased to fill the planters.
Walking paths were also incorporated into the side and back playground through a collaborated project with grants from Noventis, the Headingley Community Foundation and fundraising dollars raised at BBE.
Indoors Monterey– upgrades to many of our appliances were necessary this year as they were failing or had failed and we invested close to $10,000 in 2 stoves, a freezer, and 2 washer and dryer sets.
The entire centre has had wall paneling installed to help create a welcoming, warm and inviting space for children to play in. This paneling is easy to clean, more sanitary and helps reduce noise in the rooms. This will also minimize expenses for long-term repairs and painting that is required almost annually.
For enhanced safety, camera’s were installed indoors at both sites and at the Monterey site cameras were installed around the perimeter of the building outside. Blinds and a key fob system was also purchased. Fundraising dollars, grants and in-kind donations helped with the renovations and lease hold improvements totaling close to $26,000.
Program (both sites)
Magnetic tiles are purposeful toys that helps creativity, critical thinking skills, eye hand co-ordination, pincher and fine motor skills, it helps children learn to share, take turns, work in a team, problem solve and collaborate. In early years it helps teach children about colors, patterns, counting, shapes and sizes and as children grow older, they learn about weight, height, load-bearing support, angles, and much more. The tiles can turn into bridges, castles, towers, aquariums, jungles, ships, window art, and many other amazing structures and children from age 1– 12 enjoy them. Almost all children enjoy them on a daily basis. Over the year, we invested in tiles so that all rooms at both locations have several boxes each, which equates to close to $7,000.
Staff and children at school age and the Monterey site were instrumental in looking through our supplier catalogs and helping to pick out items that were purposeful, totaling approximately $20,000. These included: new board games, a variety of outdoor supplies and outdoor toys/equipment, reading material, waffle blocks, toy dragons, animals, and other building manipulatives, science based activities, puzzles, new tables, chairs, sensory tables, shelving units, daily living items, music and craft supplies. Magnetic bulletin boards have been purchased to display artwork and information at Monterey. As well as 60 sleeping mats and close to 100 sheets were purchased totaling around $5,000.
Each room in all programs received a laptop computer that helps the staff to plan activities, send out journals and updates and take on-line workshops and search for resources.
This year we added a 10 space toddler program and purchased close to $6,500 in equipment and materials to start up the program, which included age/developmentally appropriate toys and activities, tables, chairs, a change station, lockers and shelving units.
How do we work out a budget amount for activities?
A formula is used to calculate the approximate cost of activities per child/month for budget purposes. Before fundraising and/or grants, this totals approximately $22,000, or $150/ child for the year, which is very little over a year. Your fundraising efforts are greatly appreciated so that we can provide your children with fun experiences that are play-based and help your child prepare for school.
Special visitors or events from both centres, totaling $6,900 included karate workshops, Crock A Doodle, music programs, entertainers, science and fitness workshops and 2 spectacular performances from the Folklorama group. which included the Mexican pavillion – with many thanks to Adriana for organizing and the British pavilion. Thank you to Clyde Heerah for an amazing steel -drum performance. We also participated in yoga lessons, carnival day, musical grand-friends, and more. The pre-kinder children went on a trip in collaboration with Phoenix school to the MTYP theatre.
FUNDRAISING PLAN FOR 2019:
In 2019 we plan to continue with upgrades at the Monterey site and will finish off our upgrade by painting the top half of the walls. We are also in the process of the moving our laundry room to an area that allows for both machines to fit as well as a laundry tub. This will allow the rooms to do laundry on a daily basis, helping with our health and wellness.
The old laundry room has evolved into a kitchen storage area and in the future, we are looking to add more counterspace in the kitchen so that it is easier to cook for close to 85 children daily.
Role out storage bins will be incorporated under each of the lofts in the preschool program. Other items on our wish list is a water-play table, ($6,000) picnic tables, prairie grasses, trees and the addition of a canoe and fishing boat. We also hope to add a climbing rope/large net to the hill structure, garden boxes and a watering system. A new fridge for the school age program and shelving and new strollers for the infant program which are close to $3,500 each.
Other funds will be used to replenish the toys that are damaged or destroyed throughout the year as well as a variety of special visitors that we are currently organizing and will share in the future.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Lori as your feedback is valuable.
SURVEY RESULTS:
In late 2018, the Board of Directors sent out a fundraising survey. We have reviewed all of the responses and have carefully chosen our fundraising campaigns for 2019 based on the feedback we received. Our goal in 2019 is to raise $18,000and a goal thermometer will be posted at both centers so that you can see our progress. We will continue to share with you, throughout the year, what was purchased with the funds received from each of the fundraisers.
Donations may be made by cheque, cash or money order. A charitable donation receipt will be provided for any donations of $10. The name and address of the donor will be on the receipt.
